Nov/Dec 2023 Philanthropy Update

SDBB collects and distributes blood so patients like Keely can live and thrive.

Dear Friend,

Thanksgiving is a time for us to reflect on the commitment and generosity our dedicated financial donors have shown throughout the year. San Diego Blood Bank sincerely thanks you for your support in furthering our lifesaving mission. Without you, we would not be able to help improve the lives of nearly 450,000 patients throughout Southern California each year. Thank you for making an impact through SDBB!

We are now launching our Giving Tuesday/Year-End Campaign to support our nine local donor centers. Gifts made towards this campaign will support the needs of our donor centers as we welcome blood donors this holiday season. You can support your local donor center or help our centers throughout the region by funding supplies and equipment. Cancer patients, as well as those who require surgeries, or experience complications depend on our blood supply to survive. Together, we are making a difference in the lives of patients like Keely (featured above) who relied on blood to survive.

I hope you enjoy this philanthropy update. For information about our Year-End Campaign and the needs of our local donor centers, please contact me at cclector@sdbb.org or 619.400.8214.

Wishing you and yours a happy and joyous Thanksgiving!

Many thanks,

Cherryl

TOGETHER, WE REACHED OUR GOAL

TO FUND 300 new COOLERS!

Because of generous individual donors, we reached our goal to fund 300 new coolers to transport lifesaving blood from generous blood donors like John (on left) to patients like Keely.

The new, larger coolers will allow us to increase the efficiency of blood transport to our hospital partners. We are grateful to every donor that helped fund a cooler. Your support will benefit local patients for years to come!

november 15, 2023

National Philanthropy Day, or NPD, celebrates the charitable work that EVERYONE does to make a difference and create impact in their communities. It is a celebration of philanthropy — giving, volunteering, and charitable engagement — that highlights the accomplishments, large and small, that philanthropy, and all those involved in the philanthropic process, make to our society and our world.

Did you know?

  • In the United States, there are more than one and a half million charities.

  • 78 million people provide billions of volunteer hours to countless causes across the country.

  • Americans annually give nearly $500 billion to charities and nonprofit organizations that improve communities everywhere.

SDBB is grateful to our outstanding volunteer blood donors, volunteers, corporations, and foundations that support our mission to save lives. Our work to collect lifesaving blood and support innovative medical research would not be possible without their support.

community partner SUPPORT

San Diego Blood Bank extends a warm THANK YOU to Republic Services volunteers for helping dress-up this year’s Winter Wishes Bears with special holiday tags!

Each year, San Diego Blood Bank helps make the holidays a little brighter for patients at Sharp Grossmont Hospital. Along with our long-time partners, Grossmont Healthcare District and Sharp HealthCare, dedicated blood donors who are active members of the Guardians Circle Donor Program and SDBB Financial Development and Hospital Services departments team up to distribute the bears to patients.

It is our great pleasure to partner with our loyal blood donors, Grossmont Healthcare District, and Sharp staff and volunteers, to bring holiday cheer year after year.

Meet team survivor rosa maria

As a child and young adult, Rosa Maria felt lethargic and fatigued, but she never knew why. She and her 7 siblings did not have preventative medical visits and only saw a doctor for a medical emergency. When she finished college, Rosa Maria understood the importance of preventative medical checkups and began her new medical journey. Rosa Maria was told she was anemic and that she needed a blood transfusion.

After her transfusion, Rosa Maria began to feel energetic and realized, “this is how I’m supposed to feel!” Rosa Maria is very thankful and is now very active in her community and has become a blood donor. She may need another transfusion in the future, so she encourages everyone she knows to donate blood on a regular basis.

Since 2020, San Diego Self Storage and Managing Partner Anthony R. Carr have generously funded four, new essential bloodmobiles to support our Mobile Blood Collection Program. San Diego Blood Bank is grateful for their dedication to our community's health and well-being. We want to thank Mr. Carr and the San Diego Self Storage team for being pillars of generosity! SDBB truly values our partnership.

“I have always felt that the heartbeat of a community is the support that is given to our local charities. San Diego Blood Bank’s need for an updated fleet of bloodmobiles offers all of us an outstanding and easy way to provide for the well-being of our community by saving and sustaining lives. Please join us in this goal. It truly matters!”

Corporate Partnership Opportunities

SDBB is grateful to our corporate partners who are passionate about saving and improving the lives of the patients we serve. They host blood drives, their employees volunteer and give blood, and they give financially to help support our greatest needs such as a new bloodmobile, lab equipment, blood collection supplies, and research.

We work with companies and organizations to create mutually beneficial partnership opportunities, and there are many ways to support our work, including:

  • Make a corporate gift to support a specific need

  • Sponsor an event such as our Connect to Life receptions

  • Help fund programs like Precision Blood™ or the High School Blood Drive Challenge

  • Encourage employee volunteering

  • Make a gift in honor of employee volunteer hours

  • Provide a matching gift for an annual appeal

  • Conduct a point-of-sale or cash register round-up campaign

  • Fundraise for SDBB by hosting a gala, golf tournament, auction, run/walk, or other event that raises funds to benefit our mission

SDBB recognizes our corporate partners throughout the year in various digital and print channels, on our donor center digital displays (in six of our donor centers) and on our bloodmobiles!

For more information about corporate partnerships, please contact
Susan Josephson, Development Manager, at sjosephson@sdbb.org or (619) 400-8320.

Planned Giving

Philanthropy is personal, and every donor has a unique “why” they give. There are many ways to make a planned gift such as stock, real estate, life insurance, will or living trust, charitable gift annuity, charitable remainder trust, and charitable lead trust. SDBB also has an endowment at San Diego Foundation, and we welcome gifts to fund # 4727 (please include the fund number on your check).
