May/June 2023 Philanthropy Update

Dear Friend,

I am delighted to introduce our new Development Coordinator Kimberly Obdianela who joined the Financial Development team this spring. Kimberly is a native San Diegan who graduated from California State University San Marcos with a bachelor's degree in Human Development and Human Services. Kimberly joins us from Operation HOPE, a nonprofit that aims to improve financial inequity and provide financial literacy for San Diegans. Kimberly worked closely with the Development and Marketing teams, as well as providing support to its board of directors. Please join me in welcoming Kimberly to San Diego Blood Bank!

San Diego Blood Bank is excited to host its 7th Annual Padres Summer Blood Drive, sponsored by Sycuan Casino Resort. The blood drive will take place on Wednesday, May 31, 9am to 6pm in Gallagher Square at Petco Park. As you know, this comes at a critical time when the blood supply nationwide dips to low levels due to travel and school closures. We have an opportunity to fill our shelves with the necessary blood and blood components for patients in need. Thanks to Sycuan’s continued support, we have been successful year after year in growing our blood supply.

On behalf of San Diego Blood Bank, thank you for making a difference in the lives of people in need of lifesaving blood. Our mission is in motion because of your generous financial gifts!

Many thanks,

Cherryl

Spring Matching Appeal Campaign

To support blood collection this year, two generous financial donors have pledged to match all spring appeal gifts up to $12,000! We hope their generosity and dedication to our lifesaving mission will inspire you to consider a gift—or consistent, monthly support—to sustain our vital blood collection program that has served our community for over 73 years.

Every day, financial donors touch the lives of thousands of people. From our committed team of phlebotomists, donor technicians, blood donors, and the patients we serve — you help improve their quality of life.

Your financial gift is important because it offers immediate resources directed to vital equipment and supplies to support our Blood Collection Program.

Meet team survivor Keely

Keely suffered life-threatening injuries after falling 30 feet off a ski lift. She had 7 surgeries to repair her shattered spleen and liver and to remove a kidney. Keely was on life support in a medically induced coma for 10 days and was in the hospital for a month, where she required 30 units of life-saving blood products.

Today, she still skis and is pursuing a medical career. She organizes blood drives and speaks to groups advocating for blood donation. She thanks blood donors for her second chance at life and is now a blood donor herself.

On 14 June 2023, World Blood Donor Day will again be celebrated throughout the world. Officially designated as an annual event by the World Health Assembly in 2005, the day provides a special opportunity to celebrate and thank voluntary blood donors around the world for their gift of blood and has become a major focus for action towards achieving universal access to safe blood transfusion.

Blood donors are the guardians of the community. Blood donors are humans helping humans for the good of all. Giving blood is the ultimate act of love and kindness. When caring people come together to give life, our region can rely on a safe, diverse, and robust blood supply for patients in need.

Only 3% of the population donates blood. These helpful heroes shoulder the burden. Blood donors protect our neighbors and families. Donations from voluntary, unpaid blood donors ensure more local lives are saved.

Blood recipients are grateful. Watch our 3-minute video on YouTube about how blood donors impact life.

“It feels good to be part of a community where we all look out for each other.”  — SDBB Donor

Health and Wellness

JUNE IS NATIONAL MIGRAINE AND HEADACHE AWARENESS MONTH

In June, National Migraine and Headache Awareness Month shines a spotlight on a debilitating condition that affects 1 in 7 Americans.

Migraines and headaches wreak havoc on a sufferer’s daily life. While a migraine is a headache, a headache isn’t always a migraine. Headaches cause pain in the neck, sinuses, face, and head. Migraines, however, cause debilitating pain, visual disturbances, or both. They can last for hours or days and are often chronic. Without relief, migraines can cause other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, muscle weakness and can also lead to depression.

Migraine requires a diagnosis by a physician. While treatments are available for migraines, it can take time to find one that works for you. Migraine sufferers often face stigma. Since nearly everyone has had a headache, a migraine is a different type of pain. Combined with variable duration and symptoms, migraines are more than “just a headache.” Missing work or events due to migraine adds to the stress of the condition. During National Migraine and Headache Awareness Month, it’s important to keep these concerns in mind when a friend or family member is dealing with a migraine.

National Migraine and Headache Awareness month encourages education, research, and improved treatments. All month long, organizations will be presenting information on their websites, webinars, and facilities. Join the movement and earn more about the causes and symptoms of migraines. If you suffer from migraines, discover more about treatments or track your triggers. Triggers might include food, sleep habits, or dehydration, but there are many other migraine triggers. Show your support for those who live with migraines by wearing purple (like purple sunglasses from ShadesForMigraine.org) or changing your social media profile purple. Help eliminate the stigma associated with migraine by sharing your experiences and reading the experiences of others. When you participate, use #MigraineAndHeadacheAwareness Month or #MHAM on social media.
